Churchill's Pub sits inside a historic Bay Street building dating back to Savannah's post–Civil War rebuilding era in the late 1860s, when the area served as the center of the city's shipping and cotton trade economy. Before becoming Churchill's, the location operated as Wally's Sixpence Pub, a well-known British-style tavern popular with locals throughout the 1980s and early 1990s.

In 1999, the space was transformed into Churchill's Pub, inspired by Sir Winston Churchill and designed to recreate the atmosphere of an authentic English public house in the heart of Savannah. The interior became famous for its dark wood craftsmanship, brass fixtures, historic brick cellar, and especially its massive handcrafted bar, which local lore claims was built by the same artisan connected to the iconic bar from the television show Cheers.

Over time, Churchill's expanded into a multi-level destination featuring Winston's Wine Cellar downstairs, the '10 Downing' event space upstairs, and eventually one of downtown Savannah's most popular rooftop terraces. The building also became part of Savannah's ghost-tour culture due to decades of paranormal stories, including reports of shadow figures and the famous 2013 incident where beer taps allegedly turned on by themselves overnight.

Churchill’s became known for blending traditional British pub fare with Savannah’s Southern and Lowcountry food culture. In its early years, the menu focused heavily on classic English comfort foods such as shepherd’s pie, fish and chips, Scotch eggs, steak-and-ale pie, and bangers and mash, helping establish the restaurant as one of the South’s most recognizable British pubs.

As Savannah evolved into a nationally recognized culinary destination, Churchill’s adapted by introducing seafood dishes, shrimp and grits, elevated gastropub offerings, craft cocktails, and an expanded whiskey and beer program while still maintaining its British identity. The rooftop terrace and lively pub atmosphere helped transform Churchill’s from a traditional tavern into a full dining and nightlife experience, making it a longtime favorite among tourists, locals, soccer fans, and Savannah hospitality workers alike.
